Hello lovelies. It’s time for me to dust off Elna and make my dreams come true by learning how to design and sew my own clothes. Follow my journey with Sew It! Academy | Project 1 – Sunglasses Case With Lining.

THE PROJECT – SUNGLASSES CASE WITH LINING
One of the reasons I love sewing is that it is both creative and productive. Two birds with one project.
I’d dabbled a little over the years with sewing projects for the home such as an ironing cover and a plastic bag holder, which I ended up gifting away because who uses plastic bags anymore?
Other projects included a couple of garments for myself like a skirt. Even though I didn’t have too much of a clue about what I was doing, I still managed to fumble my way through but there was a sense of pride in completing something handmade, even if the zipper was puckered and skewiff.
My first sewing project with Sew It! Academy was sure to be a success because I was following instructions that are designed to teach beginners like me how to sew.
SHOPPING FOR SUPPLIES
Ahhh, Spotlight my dear friend. How I missed you and the countless metres of fabric I had purchased, washed, ironed, and folded neatly away to remain untouched in my stash.
But this time was different! Armed with my supplies list (which was two items) I knew that the fabric I was buying was going to be put to use!
That didn’t stop me from wistfully running my hands across new fabrics and dreaming of all the pretty sundresses I could make. Soon my precious. Soon.
THE CHALLENGES
Although it was a simple project I found sewing the pieces together a little finicky for a newbie which I ‘spose is the par for small sewing projects but I kept at it.
It was also a little awkward watching video content (pausing often) but at the same time, I could rewind and start the lesson over if I didn’t quite get it.
THE RESULT
After some practice runs with the supplied printouts I started with my fabric. I saw a lot of improvement in my seams which were consistently straighter because the course taught the correct spot to focus as I sewed.
In less than one course, over the duration of a couple of hours, I became a lot more confident that I could actually start to sew better.
It was so rewarding to finish the first sewing project that I made two cases.
My favourite part was showing them off to the Sew It! community which is a thriving, friendly support network where everyone posts their finished results and encourages each other. I was pleased as punch when Mimi liked it too! 😍
I’m another step closer to making my own wedding dress!
QUESTION
What trend are you currently loving? I was all for the heart-shaped sunglasses but then I had to start wearing prescription shades for driving. I did find this awesome online store that has a lot more styles and frames to choose from than the standard optician store, plus they’re more economical to purchase from than using my private health. Check them out here.
